Dust Mite Bedding
Research has shown that lowering exposure to dust mite allergens found in all contaminated dust mite bedding, can help asthma and allergy sufferers by reducing the frequency and severity of their allergy symtoms and reducing their need for medication.
To gain welcome relief from dust mite allergy symptoms, it is essential to understand the most important allergen sources and triggers and learn how to deal effectively with them. By finding the most effective ways saves you a lot of time and energy cleaning your home with the best impact on your family's allergen exposure.
In your home, 50% of dust mite allergens are found in your mattress. Mattress depth and construction means that no amount of vacuuming or dust mite killer sprays or powders will render them free from house dust mite allergy producing allergens.
Another major source of dust mite allergen, is your pillow. Every night your nose is pressed up against it when ou sleep.
If you are allergic to dust mites, completely encase mattresses, pillows and doonas with specialised dust mites covers, with a zip, like a sealed envelope, providing effective and complete dust mite prevention.
Choose only those fabrics specifically developed, tested and proven as a barrier against dust mite allergens. Not an inhibitor, complete dust mite proof bedding. The material pore size the space or opening between intersected woven fibres needs to be at least 6.1 microns where the fibres are so tightly woven, blocking dust mite allergens to below detectable levels. Dust mites and their faeces are larger at 10-40 microns in diameter.
The dust mite mattress cover and dust mite pillow covers need to be air permeable so as air and moisture can transmit readily through the fabric leaving you cool and comfortable all night long.
The dust mites bedding covers should be lightly vacuumed or wiped with a damp cloth each week when changing the top sheets. To get rid of dust mites, wash normal sheets, doona covers and pillow cases once a week in hot water.
Wash allergy bedding in hot water up to 55ºC every 3 to 4 months to maintain hygiene, killing dust mites and preventing a build up of allergen on the cover. A simple tip, stop the wash load and let stand for at least 20 minutes before draining.
Replace feather and down pillows, bed quilts, and doonas with non allergenic allergy free bedding such as silk, cotton or synthetic bedding. Replace pillows every 2-3 years and avoid woolen underlays.
Blankets should be hot washed monthly (at least) or if woollen, follow label instructions and use anti dust mite laundry liquid to assist getting rid of dust mites in the wash.
On a day forecast to be bright, sunny and dry, take your mattresses, blankets and doonas outside for at least 3 hours and beat them using a tennis racket, broom or length of timber. Lean the mattress against a wall to catch the sun, turning them over later to catch the sun's natural UVA and UVB rays on the reverse side. This will disperse some, but not all, of the dust mites and their allergens. Bring the mattresses inside before the sun leaves the mattress, preventing shadow, coolness and damp. Matress cleaning service using speacialised mattress cleaning equipment is available in Sydney by contacting Mitey Fresh on (02) 9986 3432.
Regular washing of clothes will remove skin cells and allergens. How to kill dust mites? Dry cleaning will kill dust mites but 20-70% of the allergen will be retained. Important alert, discard pastic wrapping immediately and air dry cleaned items for up to 3 days before using or placing in storage.
How to get rid of dust mites or dust mite removal in the wash, use an effective laundry liquid rather than a powder. Laundry powder particles tend to cling to the fabric, even after rinsing, dry into the fabric, and aggravate skin irritations in sensitive eczema and chemical sufferers. Consider air purifers rental when you need it most, natural relief for asthma in the wash with a washing liquid, Breathe-Ezy Total Laundry Care.
