Dust Mite Mattress Protector
Answers to frequently asked questions regarding your dust mite mattress protector and other dust mite covers for pillows and doonas, such as what size to buy, how do I put the protector on the bed and do I take it off at the same time I wash my regular sheets?
An average queen-sized mattress hosts around 2 million dust mites, feeding on your flaked skin cells, excreting 20 to 30 faecal pellets, 15 microns in size, twice their body weight, every day. A 6 year old pillow can hold up to a tenth of it's weight in dustmite bodies and faecal matter.
Just consider, each morning you awaken to an extra 40-60 million faecal pellets in your mattress! If dust mites allergy related symptoms are affecting you, encasing mattresses, pillows and doonas may provide welcome relief.
So, how do you use a dust mite protector?
Dust mite protectors totally encase your mattress, pillow and doona, with a zip. Then make the bed up with your decorative sheets, pillow cases and doona covers.
What size protector do I buy?
You buy the standard size that best fits the mattress size that you want to cover, cot, single, double, queen, king etc. If you are unsure, an extra deep side, relatively thin maybe, or an odd sized mattress, measure your mattress length, width and depth in centimetres. Measure without blankets and sheets but include any pillow top and foam mattress pads if you have any. Dust mite covers allow 2 to 5 cms extra on all measurements, depending on the brand. Buy the mattress protector that best fits the mattress size.
Dust mite mattress protectors can be custom made to provide a proper fit, avoid movement or material slipping under you whilst lying in bed.
Regarding pillow and doona protectors, you buy the standard size that best fits the item you want to cover. Countries around the world will have different "standard" sizes. Here at Mitey Fresh we can custom make dust mite bedding to your measurements click dust mite mattress cover here.
Will I notice the dust mites mattress cover when I am asleep in bed?
Formerly, protective dust mite covers were only available in plastic, making you feel sweaty and the noise of the "crackling" plastic would drive you crazy. Fortunately, technology has improved with newer fabrics ompletely preventing antigens to pass through the tightly woven, impermeable fibres. Yet, at the same time, the fabrics are breathable, allowing air flow and perspiration through, providing comfort and a good night's rest without feeling clammy and hot. You will not even know they are there!
Can I put the covers on myself?
Yes, pillow and doona covers are put on just like you would normally with decorative covers. Mattress covers, however, we recommend you get someone to help you.
- Undo the zipper of the cover.
- With a person standing on either side of the length of the mattress, stand it on it's width end at the foot of the bed frame.
- Gently pull the unzipped cover, evenly, over the width of the mattress to at least 80 to 90% of the way down. It could tear if you pull unevenly or too hard.
- Lay the mattress back onto the bed.
- Bring the cover ends together before zipping it up.
- Place the mattress into position on the bed, ready to be made up with your decorative covers.
How often do I wash the covers?
We recommend you wash your mattress and doona covers every three to six months or at change of season providing a hygienic environment. We understand that mattresses can be cumbersome and taking off and putting covers on can be. Pillow covers can be washed more regularly. In between washes, vacuum with a HEPA vacuum or wipe over surface of mattress protector with a slightly damp cloth. We recommend that you wash your bed linen weekly in hot water once a week. How do I know that the brand I buy will be effective in dust mite control?
Don't buy the cheapest covers on the market or toxic dust mite spray and compromise your family's health. Choose only those fabrics specifically developed, tested and proven as a barrier against dust mite allergens. Not an inhibitor.
The material pore size, the space or opening between intersected woven fibres needs to be at least 6.1 microns where the fibres are so tightly woven, blocking dust mite allergens to below detectable levels. Dust mites and their faeces are larger at 10-40 microns in diameter.
Simply, a dust mite mattress protector on your mattress cuts off the dust mites food source. Encase mattresses, pillows and doonas with the fabric you feel most comfortable sleeping in.
